Spiral Bound Book Printing
What's the Maximum Page Count for a Spiral-Bound Book?
Spiral coils come in two types and size ranges: plastic single coil Ø 6–25 mm (≈ 1/4″–1″) and metal single coil Ø 7–42 mm (≈ 9/32″–1-5/8″). For smooth page turns, choose a coil that’s slightly larger than the finished book block so the pages aren’t compressed.
Planning guide (100 gsm offset interior):
-
Plastic single coil: recommended max finished thickness ~21 mm (≈ 0.83″) — about 360 pages.
-
Metal single coil: recommended max finished thickness ~38 mm (≈ 1.50″) — about 640 pages.
Actual capacity varies with paper caliper and finishes. Don’t forget to include the front cover, back cover, any tabs, pockets, or laminated pages in your total thickness.
Compared with plastic, metal single coil is custom-made per order, so it’s more expensive and typically has a longer lead time. If your project is near the thickness limit, consider using the next coil size up or splitting into two volumes for easier handling.
Coil Options for Spiral Bound Books
You can choose from a range of options to customize your spiral bound book to your specific needs. None of the following choices change the fundamental advantages of spiral binding. Your book will still be practical, durable, attractive, and functional. You can turn the pages through 360°, lay the book completely flat, stand it up for presentations, and more.
The coils we use in spiral bound books come in a variety of vibrant colors and a range of sizes to suit every need.

● Matte Art Paper: Subtle sheen with excellent print quality and comfortable reading.

Offset (uncoated) paper
Uncoated Paper: Best for coloring, writing, and interactive formats; prevents bleed-through.

When Do I Need to Choose a Spiral-Bound Book?
Most people choose spiral binding because the book can open 360° and lie flat. There’s another major advantage: spiral binding isn’t constrained by 4-page signatures, so you can alternate different paper stocks anywhere in the interior. That makes it the best option when you need to:
-
Mix uncoated “write-on” pages with coated pages for photos or charts
-
Insert tabs, dividers, pockets, or tear-off forms at any position
-
Build workbooks, planners, and manuals that require frequent page turns
-
Use top-bound (flip-up) formats for notepads, calendars, or reference guides
Because spiral books aren’t forced into 4-page increments, you can change paper types at will and structure sections exactly the way your readers need them.
FAQs
What is the MOQ for spiral bound book printing?
The minimum order quantity is 100 copies.
What are common spiral bound book sizes?
The dimensions of your spiral bound book largely depend on its purpose, target audience, page count, and the type of graphics it contains. While we can produce spiral bound books in virtually any size, we generally recommend sticking to standard sizes for most projects. This approach simplifies production, reduces costs, and ensures the book meets industry standards.
Here are some suggested sizes for different types of spiral bound books:
- Company Report: 8.5″ x 11″, up to 300 pages
- Instructional Manual: 5.5″ x 8.5″, up to 200 pages
- Scholastic Workbook: 7″ x 12″, up to 300 pages
- Diary/Appointment Planner: 5.5″ x 8.5″, up to 200 pages
Of course, these are just guidelines. At QinPrinting, we offer full flexibility and can create custom spiral bound books in any size or format you require. However, keep in mind that custom sizes may incur additional costs and longer production times due to extra pre-press work.
Additionally, while there’s no minimum size requirement, 300 pages is the maximum practical limit for an effective spiral binding. For certain projects, the extra investment in customization may be worth it. Ultimately, the choice is yours to make!
