Coloring Book Paper Options
Which paper you choose to print your coloring book on will affect the price and the quality of the finished product. You’ll need two different paper types for your book.
● One kind of paper — plain white stock with an absorbent surface — for the inside pages on which we’ll print your designs for colouring-in;
● Another kind of paper — thicker, stiffer, stock with a coated surface — for your book’s cover.

Offset (uncoated) paper
● Uncoated Paper: Best for coloring, writing, and interactive formats; prevents bleed-through.

Matte Art Paper

Offset (uncoated) paper
For the cover, we suggest coated art paper.
● Gloss Art Paper: Bright finish that enhances color depth—great for illustration-heavy book cover.
● Matte Art Paper: Subtle sheen with excellent print quality and comfortable reading.
Best Paper for Coloring Books by Tool
Not every coloring book is used the same way. Tell us what your audience will color with, and we’ll match the paper.
● Crayons / colored pencils: 120–140gsm uncoated is usually enough. It’s smooth to color on and won’t show through too much.
● Water-based markers / gel pens: 140–160gsm uncoated or offset paper works better and helps reduce show-through.
● Alcohol markers (Copic, Ohuhu, etc.): we recommend single-sided printing or 160–180gsm paper. We can also add a blank page behind each design.
● For framing or classroom projects: we can add perforation so pages can be removed cleanly.
Single-Sided, Tear-Out, and Activity Layouts
Many creators want their coloring pages to stay clean, even when people use markers. We can print single-sided pages so the artwork on the back doesn’t get damaged. On the blank side we can print your logo, copyright, social media, QR code, or coloring instructions.
We can also add a micro-perforation close to the binding, so users can tear out pages to frame, share, or use in classrooms. This is popular for children’s activity books, museum or destination coloring books, subscription boxes, and Etsy sellers.
Need to mix coloring pages with mazes, word searches, tracing pages, or dot-to-dot? That’s fine — just send us the PDF and we’ll print them in the same book.

Our Book Printing Options
Coloring Book Binding Options
Choosing the right binding method is essential to the look, feel, and usability of your coloring book. The ideal binding depends on factors such as page count, intended audience, budget, and how the book will be used. Below, we outline the most popular binding options to help you select the format that best fits your project.
Saddle Stitch Coloring Books
Saddle stitch binding is a cost-effective solution ideal for shorter coloring books. Pages are folded and stapled along the spine, allowing the book to lie flat for easy coloring. We recommend saddle stitch for projects with 8 to 64 pages. It’s a simple, affordable, and professional choice.

Wire-O Coloring Books
Wire-O binding offers 360-degree page rotation, so users can lay the book completely flat or flip pages all the way around. It’s perfect for adult coloring books or designs that require ease of use. Wire-O works best for books with 32 to 200 pages. You can choose between softcover or hardcover formats and customize paper, covers, and finishes based on your needs.
Hardcover Coloring Books
Hardcover binding gives your coloring book a premium look and feel. Choose between a traditional sewn hardcover (180° lay-flat) or a wire-O hardcover (360° page rotation). Many customers prefer wire-O hardcover for usability, while sewn binding offers a classic presentation. Suitable for retail, gifts, and collector editions.

Perforated Coloring Books
Perforated pages allow users to remove individual sheets for framing, classroom use, or personal sharing. We add a perforated line near the binding edge so each sheet can be torn out cleanly and completely. This option is popular with educators, parents, and hobbyists alike.
Custom Coloring Book Printing by Market
Different markets have different needs when it comes to coloring book design and production. Children’s books require a focus on safety and durability, while adult coloring books often emphasize aesthetics, complexity, and ease of use. The following sections highlight the key considerations and best practices for each market.
Children's Coloring Book Printing
Safety and durability are priorities for children’s coloring books. We recommend sewn-and-perfect binding or sewn-and-hardcover binding to avoid exposed staples. Loose sheets packaged in plastic bags are another kid-friendly option, ideal for individual activities.
For paper, we suggest thicker white offset paper—120 gsm, 140 gsm, or 160 gsm—to handle crayons, markers, and watercolor pencils without bleed-through. All materials meet strict safety and quality standards.

Safety and Kid-Friendly Options
For children’s coloring books, we can tailor the production to make it safer and more durable:
● Rounded corners
● No exposed staples (saddle stitch with cover wrap, or board-book style)
● Thicker pages to reduce tearing
● Wipeable / laminated covers for classrooms and libraries
If you need to follow US or EU requirements for children’s products — including CPC / CPSIA / EN71 / CE — tell us in advance and we will suggest suitable materials, inks, and finishes.

Adult Coloring Book Printing
Adult coloring books can be printed with any binding style depending on design, length, and budget. Popular formats include saddle stitch, Wire-O, hardcover, and loose sheets. We offer white offset paper in 100 gsm, 120 gsm, 140 gsm, and 160 gsm options, ensuring smooth coloring with markers, colored pencils, gel pens, or paint pens. Select the weight that best suits your artistic style and price point.
Custom Coloring Books for Kids, Adults, and Brands
Coloring books aren’t all the same. Some are simple black-and-white activity books for kids, some are detailed anti-stress books for adults, and some are branded books for tourism, restaurants, or events. We can print:
● Children’s coloring and activity books
● Adult / stress-relief coloring books
● Holiday and seasonal coloring books
● Bible / church / Sunday school coloring books
● Museum, destination, and travel coloring books
● Restaurant / brand / promotional coloring books
● Coloring books packed in a gift box with pencils or crayons
Tell us who it’s for — kids, adults, or classrooms — and we’ll point you to the right paper, binding, and quantity.

Design Guidelines for Coloring Line Art
Clean line art means clean coloring books. To make sure your artwork prints sharply:

Use 100% black (K) for line art, not grayscale.

Keep line weight at 0.3 mm (about 0.9 pt) or thicker.

Add 3 mm (1/8") bleed if your artwork goes to the edge.

On perfect-bound books, keep faces, text, and fine details at least 8–10 mm away from the spine.

Send us a high-resolution PDF or vector files (AI, EPS) — our prepress team will do a free manual file check before printing.

If you can't deliver vectors then make sure the resolution is 300 PPI.

Convert your colour space from RGB to CMYK
If something can be easily fixed, we’ll tell you. We work with many illustrators and first-time self-publishers, so we know the most common file issues.
FAQs
Can I include both color illustrations and black-and-white pages in my coloring book?
Yes, both color illustrations and black-and-white pages will be printed using full-color (4-color) printing. This ensures that the black-and-white pages will have crisp, sharp details while the color illustrations will pop with vibrant colors.
What are the economical coloring book sizes?
The most popular size for coloring books is the portrait-oriented 8.5″ x 11″ format, suitable for both children and adults. A landscape orientation (11″ x 8.5″) also works well.
Other common sizes include:
- 8″ x 8″: A square format, often used for more compact and fun designs.
- 7″ x 10″: A slightly smaller option, perfect for easy handling and portability.
- 6″ x 9″: A common size for more portable, pocket-sized coloring books.
For first-time publishers or those on a budget, starting with the standard 8.5″ x 11″ size is a practical choice that meets consumer expectations.
What are the best coloring book paper option?
For coloring book interior pages, we recommend white offset (uncoated wood-free) paper. It absorbs ink and prevents smudging. Choose 160 gsm or 180 gsm for thicker pages that prevent bleed-through, especially with markers.
For the cover, we suggest coated art paper, which is thicker and more durable. It enhances the visual appeal of your design. We recommend 250 to 300 gsm (168 to 200 lb) for a sturdy, professional finish.
How much does it cost to print a coloring book?
How long will it take to print my coloring book?
The paperback coloring book printing process typically takes 5-10 business days, depending on the complexity of your project. If you have a tight deadline, please let us know, and we will try to accommodate your schedule.
How do I prepare my files for printing?
Submit artwork as a high-resolution PDF with a 3 mm bleed. Embed all fonts and ensure black-and-white line art is 300 dpi for best results.
Can I print a coloring book with a spiral or wire binding?
Yes, we offer spiral and wire binding options for easy page turning and to allow the book to lay flat for coloring.
Can I order a proof before printing the entire run?
Yes, we offer proofing services so you can review the final product before we proceed with the full print run. This ensures everything is to your satisfaction.
Can I customize the cover of my coloring book?
Absolutely. We offer softcover and hardcover options, with matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, and other finishes.
